Patrick Mahomes II has had a whirlwind of a year. It began with becoming the starting quarterback and ended with being one game away from the Super Bowl and being crowned the NFL MVP.

Athletic prowess obviously runs in the family, as his father Patrick Mahomes Sr. was a major league pitcher and played for teams like the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Socks. And like himself, he thought his son was better at baseball or basketball than he was at football. But now it’s pretty clear that Patrick made the right decision to take his talents to the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I knew he was going to be a professional athlete from an early age. Baseball definitely I know he could’ve made. Basketball would’ve been the hardest for him because of his size,” Mahomes told TMZ. “Football was probably the one I would’ve said was his worst chance of making it to the pros and that ended up being his best.”

The elder Mahomes also had to pick a sport to pursue at an early age when he received college scholarships to play basketball and football—both of which he turned down to play college baseball at Arkansas and was eventually drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 6th round of the 1988 draft.

Funny enough, Mahomes II didn’t start playing the quarterback position until his junior of high school. As Division One schools began to approach the younger Mahomes for recruitment as a defensive player, his father didn’t see why he continued to play to sport at all. But as we now know, Mahomes didn’t take his father’s advice.

“I was telling him, ‘Why don’t we just quit this and concentrate on the other two? We’re just wasting our time with the football thing,” Mahomes said. “Luckily he didn’t listen to me.”

We can understand where his pops is coming from, especially after a video recently dropped of Mahomes dribbling through defenders, hitting a spin move, and going for an easy lay-up. Kansas City Chiefs brass was quick to make sure Mahomes stays off the hardwood and stays on the turf—preferably in the pocket.
