HBCU’s are institutions of higher learning primarily focusing on educating the African American Community.  These institutions were established before 1964.  They are accredited institutions and nationally recognized as such.  There are 107 HBCUs in the United States, including public and private institutions, community and four-year institutions, medical and law schools.

  • #4 –Morehouse College  GA – 1867
  • #3 – Hampton University  VA – 1868
  • #2- Howard University DC – 1867
  • #1 – Spelman College in Atlanta GA founded in 1881. Spelman started as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary Oldest historical black college for women.
