Perfect weather and a roaring crowd set the stage for Sheila E. to deliver a riveting performance during the 23rd Annual Neighborhood to Neighborhood (N2N) Street Festival hosted by Senator Anthony H. Williams, along with Black Women In Sport Foundation.
It’s been just two weeks since her Billboard chart-topping ICONIC CD dropped, and Sheila indulged N2N Festival goers with a big treat by giving them one of the first live performances from her amazing, eclectic new project. Opening her set with the soulful and inspiring “Funky National Anthem”, she instantly sent the screaming crowd into a dance frenzy as she not only served the new songs, but reached back for the old school tunes, including her signature funky hit, “Glamourous Life.”
The excitement catapulted as Sheila opted to leave the security of the stage, taking her guitar and mic far past the metal barriers to perform while standing out in the midst of the massive gathering – allowing fans to be up close and personal for her delivery of “RockStar.” Such a gesture is a rarity in this day and age – but then again, Sheila is a rare gift with quite an apparent love for what she does and love for the people.
The crowd, wearing a sea of purple hues in honor of the N2N Festival’s special tribute to the legendary icon Prince, showed support and appreciation as Sheila gave renditions of some of the tunes he made famous including “America”, “Housequake”, “17 Days” and the soul-stirring trademark ballad, “Purple Rain.” With everyone’s hand in the air slowly waving in solidarity, needless to say it was a mesmerizing moment that gave the people exactly what they came for. When it comes to Prince tributes, absolutely no one delivers in musicianship and spirit as his greatest protégé, the Iconic Sheila E.
The 2017 N2N Festival was a very well put together day-long event free for all ages providing food, games, health screenings, vendors, and A-list entertainment from morning til dawn. The planning and hard work behind the scenes paid off as all was accomplished in the spirit of unity in the community.
