In this “get rich quick” society, more opportunities to try your luck in the DC Metropolitan area are proving detrimental for many residents. Problem gambling is on the rise. With the development of a new and expanding casino system in Maryland, the cases of pathological (compulsive) gambling and those who have a diagnosed gambling disorder are on the rise.
In this episode of Radio One’s Community Affairs, we speak with Deborah Haskings, President of the Maryland Council on Problem Gambling, about the extent of problem gambling in our area, public policy, and the warning signs of someone with a potential gambling addiction. Also, hear “D” give a first hand account of his struggle with problem gambling and his continued gambling recovery.
The Maryland Council on Problem Gambling (MCPG) is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation. Its mission is primarily one of advocacy for those affected by gambling problems, working to increase public awareness about problem gambling and advocate for treatment, education, prevention and research for those adversely affected by gambling and for the community at large. Now in partnership with the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling (the Center), the MCPG contracts with the Center to administer the Helpline and offer training and education programs and materials statewide.
