We still have about two months before Halloween arrives, yet the inappropriate costumes are already starting to surface. So far this week, people have launched a change.org petition against the Caitlyn Jenner costume that has surfaced, released by Spirit Halloween (also responsible for “Sexy Ebola Nurse”) and there’s also a costume featuring a dead Cecil the Lion and the dentist who killed him. So, here’s a nifty short list of all the costumes that you should probably just stay away from this Halloween.
Here’s a snippet from the petition that will hopefully change your mind:
With a reputation of sexist, racist, and culturally appropriative costumes, we are concerned that this costume will continue your oppressive tradition with a transphobic costume of Caitlyn Jenner…To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse…At a time when trans women and GNC folx, especially black trans women, are being murdered at such a high rate, and homelessness, unemployment, and inaccessibility to healthcare run rampant in our community, making fun of one or all of us is utterly insensitive and deplorable.
There you have it.
Cecil the Lion
Sandra Bland Or Any Victims of Police Brutality
This one hopefully sounds like a “WTF, why would anyone do that?” type of thing, but people have tried it, and tried it, and tried it in the past. People have dressed as Treyvon Martin and George Zimmerman on more than one occasion, thinking it was funny.
Self explanatory. Step away from the tar, black eye shadow, bronzer, or any kind of dark makeup.
Don’t do it. Not Bill Cosby with a dummy representing a drugged woman, not Bill Cosby with some pills. Not even if it’s Cliff Huxtable.
Terrorists From Isis Or Boko Haram
Had to put that one out there since someone dressed as a Boston Marathon victim. So, yeah.
