Wrongful Death Lawsuit Waged Onto New York City After Rikers Island Inmate Commits Suicide

Kalief Browder’s story rocked the nation when it was revealed that the teenage Black boy had been held at Rikers Island prison for three years without charges or a conviction after allegedly stealing a backpack. Browder suffered brutal beatings by prison guards and gang members at Rikers. He also was forced to serve a total of 800 days in solitary confinement after numerous suicide attempts while in custody. Browder finally killed himself in June 2015. Now Browder’s family is coming after the city by filing a wrongful death suit for $20,000,000 at the controller’s office, stating that Browder endured conditions comparable to torture and was irreversibly traumatized. They’re also arguing that Browder never received adequate care for his mental health issues or for being suicidal. Read more at The New York Daily News.
