Black Girl Magic’ is a real thing. And it seems to scare the crap out of some people whenever it gets even just a little bit of attention. We’ve seen how people treat Serena Williams with such disdain, despite the fact that she’s killing it, and has been doing so, since she stepped on the court. And like Serena, there are countless amounts of Black women who receive the most deplorable treatment when they showcase themselves as being unapologetically amazing.

MUST READ: YAASSSS!!! Misty Copeland Becomes First Black Principal Dancer At ABT

Here are some of our favorite women doing the damn thing:

1. Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland was made the first ever Black principal at the American Ballet Theatre just a few weeks ago. Copeland has talked about having to face racism in the field, which is no surprise seeing as ballet is historically one of the whitest, wealthiest artistic endeavors one can pursue.

2. Jacqueline Woodson

Remember last year when Jacqueline Woodson was awarded the prize for young people’s literature for her book, “Brown Girl Dreaming”? Well, racist watermelon jokes followed thanks to the host, Daniel Handler. Talk about poor taste. Why is your first reaction to a Black woman winning, a racist joke?

3. Gabby Douglas

Gabby Douglas, the Olympic gymnast, who was 17 at the time, was on the receiving end of some pretty racist reactions as well as unnecessary comments about her perfectly well-done hair. She still brought home the gold though.

4. Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama has had more class in the last six years than most people will ever have in a lifetime. From picking apart her appearance to criticizing every difference she has tried to make, Obama still comes out on top. Haters, how do you feel that one of the world’s most powerful women is Black, beautiful, and brilliant?

5. Ava DuVernay

Ava DuVernay was snubbed earlier this year at the Oscar nations for Selma. But not without many people boycotting it because of her snub (as well as other Black people in the industry). The Academy seems to be threatened by a Black woman telling Black stories and having Black people be heroes and heroines. Well, too bad because DuVernay is here for that. And we are here for her!

See world: Here’s the thing you don’t understand. No matter what you throw at us, no matter how hard we have to battle sexism, racism, and your ridiculous notions and perceptions, we will find a way to succeed. Not just for us, but for those who came before us, and for those who will come after us.
