Jean-Michel Basquiat was a Neo-Expressionist painter in the 1980s and has been credited with bringing the African-American and Latino experience into the elite art world. Basquiat’s reputation has soared since his death from a drug overdose in 1988 at the age of 27. He is best known for his primitive style and his collaboration with pop artist Andy Warhol.

His painting, “Dustheads” sold for $48.8 million on Wednesday and has set a new auction record for the graffiti artist at a sale of postwar and contemporary art in New York.

“Untitled” sold for $14.6 million at Sotheby’s in 2007, and “Untitled (Boxer)” sold for $13.5 million in New York in 2008.
