Steven St. Bernard caught a seven-year-old girl after she fell from a third-story window in Brooklyn, New York, the New York Daily News reports.
“I just prayed that I’d catch her,” said St. Bernard, 52, an MTA bus driver. “I was right underneath her.”

Incredibly, the girl, Keyla McCree, survived the fall. Though she was not injured, she was taken to the hospital as a precaution. “Not a scratch on her,” the mother, Shaleema McCree, told the New YorkPost. “The man caught her, thank God. “It’s a miracle.”
St. Bernard, on the other hand, suffered a torn tendon in his left bicep from making the life-saving catch.
The little girl crawled through an open space her apartment window next to the air conditioner around 2:30 p.m, according to witnesses. She then began joking around and dancing on top of the air conditioning unit before loosing her balance. The family was not required to have a window guard if an air conditioning unit was there in its place.
Police have not filed charges against the family.
St. Bernard, who lives in the same building, was alerted to the situation by cries of onlookers, according to the Daily News. The father of four said that one of his children is the same age as the girl he caught. Humility is a strong suit of his as he rebuffed the savior-like commentary pouring on him.
“I’m not a hero — anybody would have done it,” he told the Daily News. “I did it out of normal instincts.”
Well, we are all thankful that St. Bernard’s instincts–and his caring spirit–helped him to save this little girl. Let us celebrate this fine American hero and trumpet his story for all to read and see.
