Miami Beach police told The Root that there were no signs of foul play and the department is classifying Kennedy’s case as a “death investigation pending toxicology results.”

Those results can take four to six weeks. Miami Beach police say they were called after 12 p.m. on Monday, June 11 to Kennedy’s apartment where she was found by maintenance workers in her building.

“There was no sign of break-in,” Sgt. Bobby Hernandez told The Root. “It could be medical-related or it could be a suicide if we find that she had drugs in her system that’s not conducive to taking a couple extra aspirin, where it’s obvious she ingested a certain drug too much.”

If it is found that Kennedy died from an excessive intake of drugs, police said they would then interview her relatives to determine whether she attempted suicide in the past or if the writer suffered from depression.

Kennedy’s latest novel, “Feminista,” is a story about smart, modern women. She is perhaps most known for her debut novel, “Bling,” which was a New York Times best-seller.
