Three years ago to the day on November 4th, 2008, Barack Obama was elected the first African American President of the United States.

The day was historic for many not just in the United States, but across the globe as people of African descent rejoiced America turning the page and electing one of its own.

The Democratic candidate was the first African-American to be nominated by a major party tallying 365 electoral votes to 173 for his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain of Arizona. He is the 44th President of the United States.
