On the heels of the violent police assault at a recent Pete Rock and Smif N’ Wessun show in New York City, we decided to compile a list of the top 5 most infamous police brutality incidents ever caught on tape.

5. Pete Rock, Smif N’ Wessun NYPD Police Brutality, 2011 – An album release party turned into a night of mayhem when cops attacked party-goers in a melee that was caught on tape. The police also allegedly struck the daughter of legendary Hip-Hop producer, Pete Rock.
4. Philadelphia Police Brutality, 2009 — An infamous car chase down a Philadelphia highway in which cops finally catch up with their suspect and excessively beat him into the ground.
3. Robert Davis Brutality, 2005 — The story of a New Orleans teacher who says he was attacked by four police officers (two white cops) and brutally beaten by them. Cops claims that Davis resisted arrest and was unruly, but the video taken by an Associated Press reporter shows a totally different story.
2. Oscar Grant Shooting, 2009 — The fatal shooting of Oscar Grant by BART Officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California, United States, in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2009 is one of the most excessive examples of police force ever. Responding to reports of a fight on a crowded Bay Area Rapid Transit train returning from San Francisco, BART Police officers detained Oscar Grant and several other passengers on the platform at the Fruitvale BART Station. Officer Johannes Mehserle Officer Mehserle stood, drew his gun and shot Grant once in the back after claiming that he was resisting arrest. Grant was unarmed. He later died sparking a fury of protests and a trial.
1. Rodney King Beating, 1991 — Everyone remembers the videotape that shocked the world when a defenseless Rodney King was shown being brutally beaten by the LAPD. A bystander videotaped the whole incident in which a bunch of cops beat King with batons, while other cops just stood by and watched. The cops were later found innocent of police brutality, which in turn sparked the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.
