Vernon Davis Emerges As a 49ers leader

I was joking with DJ Rico this week about Dunbar High School graduate Vernon Davis. I watched last weekends game and saw him put the team on his back and lead them to a victory with catch after catch. I watched as his emotions took over after the final catch, and I joked about him crying. I don’t know Vernon personally, but I did get to know Mike Singletary, his former coach. I remembered the game that Singletary told Vernon to go to the locker room. As I watched Vernon cry after the victory last Sunday, I wondered if what Mike said to Vernon helped him get to where he was always expected to be, one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Ex-NFL Player Loses Young Wife to Cancer [Video]

A former NFL player lost his young wife one month after they got married. Twelve-year NFL veteran Chris Draft lost his wife, Keasha Rutledge-Draft, to lung cancer at the tender age of 38 on Dec. 27.

“My wife, (La)Keasha Monique Rutledge Draft, passed away today at 12:04 pm. RIP Sweetie,” Draft said on his website.

Keasha, who was in a wheelchair, wheeled her way down the aisle on Nov. 27 when the couple got married.

WR Braylon Edwards Dropped By 49ers

Braylon Edwards, a man so charitable off of the field, can’t seem to catch a break on it. The San Francisco 49ers cut the former Pro Bowl wide receiver yesterday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The 49ers signed Edwards to a one-year contract worth $1 million this past August. But he struggled with injuries the entire season and was never 100 percent.

“I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense,” Edwards wrote. “I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs. I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season.”

In 2005 when he as a rookie for the Cleveland Browns, wide receiver Braylon Edwards told 100 8th graders in Cleveland, that if they met certain requirements, he would pay them each $10,000 dollars to go to college,

Amazingly, 79 of those 100 8th graders fulfilled those requirements and Edwards has followed through on his promise, donating $790,000 so the students could go to colleges . Edwards currently plays for the San Francisco 49ers and only earns $1 million a year, which is probably less than $790,000 after taxes.

Yahoo Sports reports:

As a Cleveland Browns rookie in 2005, Edwards announced he’d give $10,000 in scholarships to 100 area eighth graders if they could graduate high school with over a 2.5 GPA and 15 hours community service. Of the 100 who were afforded the opportunity, 79 met the criteria and have begun their first year of college. Many are attending Ohio universities, but the schools represented spread across the country and include Harvard, Cornell and Johns Hopkings.

Lion’s Suh Facing Suspension For Thanksgiving Day Stomp

Detroit lion’s all-pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is facing a possible two-game suspension after being ejected for stomping Green Bay packer offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith during the lion’s 27-15 Thanksgiving Day loss.

Suh, penalized with nine personal foul penalties and fines totaling $42,500 in his first two seasons, has made a name for being one of the dirtiest players in the NFL.

“First and foremost, I’m only going to apologize to my teammates, my coaches, and my true fans for allowing the refs to have an opportunity to take me out of this game,” Suh said. “What I did was remove myself from the situation in the best way I felt and me being held down in the situation that I was in and for that, my intentions were not to kick anybody, as I did not, removing myself.”
