(Annapolis, MD) — The Maryland Senate has given final approval to a bill legalizing gay marriage. Yesterday’s 25 to 21 vote came after a lot emotional debate. Prince George’s County Senator Joanne Benson was against the measure.

The bill now heads to the House of Delegates. Governor Martin O’Malley has said he’d sign it. Under the legislation, churches would not be required to participate in gay weddings.

Montgomery County Democratic Senator Richard Madeleno, the only openly gay member of the Senate, says he wants more than partnership with his loved one.
