(Washington, DC)  — The Washington area is bracing for its first major winter storm of the season today with as much as five inches of snow falling across the region .  A Winter Storm Watch goes into effect for the DC area later this afternoon and according to the Virginia Department of Transportation, road crews are ready.  Salt trucks have already been out pre-treating bridges, roads and overpasses in Northern Virginia.  Joan Morris with VDOT says officials will send out 17-hundred trucks during the storm, and there will be another 900 on standby.
