On Monday (March 8), Lil Wayne officially began a one-year prison sentence at Riker’s Island for gun possession charges. But with the sentencing being postponed several times prior (due to Wayne’s dental work and then a courthouse fire), it was an emotional ordeal for both his ex-wife Antonia “Toya” Johnson and their 11-year-old daughter Reginae.

“It was up and down, you know. One minute we thought he was going and she’d be sad and then he don’t go,” Toya told VIBE over the phone from Atlanta. “We [were] in New York like two times and we ended up turning right back around because he didn’t go.”

On the day the New Orleans rapper was finally sentenced, Toya and Reginae spoke to him but weren’t at the courthouse to say goodbye.

“The last day he finally went in, we didn’t go, so my daughter was like, ‘I wish I would’ve went.’ It was just too much. I just didn’t want to let her see that again ’cause both times she took it real hard,” said Toya. “So I was like, I’m not gon’ let her go this last time. I’m just gon’ make sure he talk to her ’cause I didn’t know if he was really gonna go. They kept pushing back.”

“He just told me to be strong and don’t really trip. Don’t let her see me down,” said Toya. “At first my daughter would see me a little sad and you know kids they react off of your feelings sometimes, so he was just like, ‘Be strong, make sure you take care of her. Make sure she straight and keep her phone on all the times so I can call her. The time is gonna fly by.’

“The whole point of him being in jail is just not good for her—to say her dad’s in jail,” Toya continued. “But at this point it is what it is, and we just gotta make the best of it. I’ma take her to visit him and talk to him and she’ll get through this eight months. It’ll fly by. I tell her all the time, ‘Just call daddy and tell him you love him,’ and he’ll be home soon.”

According to TMZ:

Shaunie O’Neal’s lawyer, Sorrell Trope, tells TMZ Shaq and Shaunie have reached agreement on all terms of the divorce, including property, custody and support.

Under the agreement, the Florida courts will have jurisdiction to officially divorce the couple. In addition, a Florida judge will handle any issues that may arise involving property division and spousal support. Trope tells TMZ the California courts will have jurisdiction over any issues related to child custody.

Also, Shaunie is prepping for the debut of her new reality series “Basketball Wives.” In an exclusive interview with Essence Magazine, she explains what went wrong in her marriage, blaming Miami groupies, whom she says are the most “aggressive” she has even seen, and Shaq’s inability to resist temptation.

Shaunie on when things started to go bad in her marriage:
[Shaq was traded to the Miami Heat] “Miami is a great city. It just wasn’t a great city for our marriage. I know they say L.A. has its groupies, but Miami has a different mentality. Even going to the games, the whole environment is so different. Girls are practically sitting in their bra and panties in the arena. When you’re trying to keep your husband, that’s a lot to take. It was a whole new lifestyle I wasn’t ready for. Apparently we didn’t have a strong enough foundation for Shaq to withstand that type of temptation.”

Shaunie on finally confronting Shaq about the infidelity rumors:
“He would deny it sometimes, and other times he would ask, ‘You got pictures? Video? If not, don’t come at me because you have no proof.’ He’d say, ‘Okay, you’re mad. Now what? You’re not going anywhere.’”

Shaunie on being accused of cheating on Shaq with her personal trainer:
“I worked out at home with my trainer, my sister, her husband and my girlfriend. I was a good girl. I wouldn’t even entertain a man flirting with me. I was that conservative. But when those rumors came out, I felt I was so small and Shaq was so big that it didn’t matter what I said; nobody was going to believe me. All I was thinking was, How could this happen to me? I had no idea how I was going to pick up the pieces. I was just done.”

Shaunie on the state of her relationship with Shaq today:
“We are becoming friends, and it’s nice because it’s something we really lacked in our marriage. I enjoy being able to talk openly to him, and I think we both learned a lot from each other during this time.”

Most Americans believe God is involved in their daily lives, from parking tickets to football scores to losing those extra pounds. That’s the finding from a Canadian researcher who looked at two U.S. surveys on the subject. Scott Schieman, a professor of sociology at the University of Toronto, found that 82-percent of respondents depended on God for help making decisions. Some 71-percent said that whatever happens, good or bad, it was all part of God’s plan. About a third agreed there was no point in planning as their fate was determined by the Almighty. Schieman observed, quote, “If you believe your fate is not in your own hands, how does that affect your own well-being?”

The polls used in the report were the Baylor Religion Survey of more than 17-hundred American adults and the Work, Stress and Health Survey of 18-hundred people. The data showed an inverse relationship between education and income and belief in divine intervention. Wealthier and better-educated Americans were less likely to believe God had a hand in their day-to-day doings. The findings are published in the journal “Sociology of Religion.”

Queen Latifah is on the prowl for baby-blue party decorations.

She’s hosting the upcoming baby shower for Paula Patton, who is pregnant with her and hubby Robin Thicke’s first child, a boy.

“It’s going to be pretty intimate,” Latifah tells me. “Not too crazy. Just close family and friends.”

Patton is reportedly due in May. “She’s my buddy,” said Latifah, who costars with Patton and Common in Just Wright. “I love her. I’ve been watching her baby grow from the beginning.”

Look for some musical gifts to be on the baby registry, because it seems the couple is expecting the little guy to be musical. “He will be,” Thicke assured.

“He will sing,” Patton said, adding with a laugh, “Look, no pressure!”

Latifah has her gift picked out. “I have some work to do, but I’m not getting her clothes. I have a special gift that I’m excited about.”

And no, she won’t be called Aunt Queen or Aunt Latifah. She’ll be using her real name instead. Latifah smiled: “I’m Auntie Dana.”

We all have moments of anger, and blow up at one time or another. There are some people in our lives that just seem to get under our skin so easily and they know it, too. When you are angry, you won’t response smartly nor would you be sensitive to the other person’s feelings. Here is a list of things you can try to keep your cool.

If you are in a heated situation, walk away! Make sure you tell the party involved that you are too mad to have a discussion, and that you need time to think it through. Giving space to cool off in a heated moment can help both parties to see clearly. The more you are around each other when you are angry, the more difficult it will be to settle disputes. Before you know it, you will also dig up the past arguments, and throw them out at your partner. Walk away, leave the scene, and cool off!

Quickly think of a role model, and recall how he/she handles the situation. If it is your father that you think of in a difficult scene, how did he react to it? Having a role model serves that purpose when you are angry and can’t focus.Who is your role model in life? A stranger you’ve seen walking away calmly when he was attacked? Your mom peacefully handled a crazy neighbor? Have at least one role model in your mind to recall to.

Weave in Some Humor. Not sarcastic jokes! Say something that is sure to crack a smile or giggle, not something that can be translated into a “put-down”. If you really can’t come up with something to say, how about singing “I’m sorry, so sorry…” You know the tune! There is nothing worse than fuming the situation with “Does your hair always look that full?

Think of an Outlet. What helps you cool down when you are mad? Think of an outlet to take that frustration out. Pound a punching bag? Hit some golf balls? Weed out your garden vigorously? Rake your yard until there are no leaves left? Whatever it is, have an outlet to blow up some steam. Women and men have different ways of handling stressful situation, and recognizing this habit in your partner will help you have a better understanding about him/her.

Know your set off point! What makes you ticked? Who usually gets in your nerve? If you realize that this particular thing or person can upset you, you can easier control it. Pay closer attention to the moment you get angry, and why you get angry will help you learn your trigger. Keep a journal and record your moods. Writing can be very therapeutic to the soul since you can freely express your feelings without worry than someone might ridicule you. Anger is not good for your health, so find ways that work for you to stay calm.

Not even a full week has passed since Gabourey Sidibe attended the 82nd Annual Academy Awards as a best actress nominee and we’re already questioning whether her career is over.

Despite the accolades bestowed upon the actress in the past few months, it’s unclear if the film industry can go against the norm and cast a young woman who is not only African-American, but also larger than the Hollywood standard in a non-niche role, as the romantic lead in a major film vehicle, for example.

During Howard Stern’s Sirius satellite show on Monday morning, co-host Robin Quivers commented that Sidibe should have looked around at the Oscars and noticed that none of the other working actresses looked like her.

“What movie could she play in?” Stern questioned on his live broadcast. “You feel bad because everyone pretends that she’s part of show business, and she’s never going to be in another movie.”

The comments made on Stern’s show sparked a heated debate among moviegoers and industry observers, with some believing the shock-jock was simply saying what everyone else is thinking.

Jeffrey Wells, a columnist who’s lent his candid perspective on the industry to a variety of outlets over the years and now blogs about it on HollywoodElsewhere.com, said in an e-mail, “Gabby is a lovely person and a fine actress, but the hard fact is that she’s way, way too fat,” adding that the actress will suffer from health problems as well as limited career opportunities if she doesn’t lose weight.

“I don’t want Gabby to not work, but the only roles she’ll have a shot at playing will be down-market moms and hard-luck girls working at Wal-Mart,” Wells continued. “No casting director would choose her to play anyone in the upscale executive world … because no one in the executive world looks like her.”

Robert Ulrich of Ulrich, Dawson and Kritzer casting, acknowledged that “every role will not be open to her,” but thinks now more than ever, directors and producers are interested in seeing something different than what’s written on the page.

“We hear over and over to think outside the box. I’ve been in the industry a long time, and it’s never been as open to people being something different than now,” Ulrich said. “I work on ‘Glee,’ and those actors never would have been cast on network television a few years ago. It’s a show about diversity, and it’s a hit.”

The thing about Sidibe, casting directors said, is that aside from the irresistible charm, wit and confidence she exhibits in interviews, which certainly don’t hurt her prospects, she’s a remarkable talent. The 26-year-old, who was born in Brooklyn, New York, displayed an irrefutable amount of it in “Precious,” and her performance becomes more mind-boggling when one learns that her resume previously contained just two small parts in college plays.

“That was an incredibly difficult role,” said Rachel Tenner, a casting director for best picture nominee “A Serious Man.”

“And from what I know of Sidibe, she’s not from that world. This [character] wasn’t something she knew, and she tapped into something pretty dark.” Having already had critics rave about her dramatic ability will work in her favor, Tenner said. “I know for myself, good is good, great is great, and as a casting director, that’s what I want.”

Tenner is right that Sidibe is as far removed from the film’s lead character as one can be, a fact that has been hammered home repeatedly since the movie opened to highlight Sidibe’s acting ability.

As Sapphire, the author of the novel “Push” that “Precious” is based on, put it during an interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric last fall, it’s not like they used a girl who has a story similar to the lead character, where they could simply put her on camera and tell her to think about her mother and cry.

“This girl is a real actress,” Sapphire said. Typically, she added, “when we do have an actress that looks like her, she’s the comic character or the old woman or something, [but] we have a heavy, dark-skinned black woman as the star of the show.”
