We all have our guilty pleasures, whether it’s watching trashy reality shows, reading the tabloids or eating bad foods, but the chick flick can be more than a simple guilty pleasure. Here are our top 5 chick flicks that we should not feel guilty about:

1) Waiting To Exhale

Terry McMillan’s sassy black sister solidarity film of four women who are unlucky in love spoke to every woman’s heart and soul. I mean who haven’t been in one of those situations? This movie came out in 1995 ,the casting was so on point and have there ever been a better soundtrack?

Robin (Lela Rochon) is the long-time mistress of Russell (Leon), who keeps reneging on his promise to leave his wife for her. She dumps him to find a man she can have to herself, but her dates with a reliable but unattractive business partner (Wendell Pierce) and a drug addict (Mykelti Williamson) send her back to Russell. Savannah (Whitney Houston) is a successful television producer who also believes that her married lover Kenneth (Dennis Haysbert) will leave his wife. Bernadine (Angela Bassett) is a wealthy woman who abandoned her own career to raise a family. Her husband is now leaving her to marry a white woman. Gloria (Loretta Devine) is a beauty salon owner and single mother raising a teenage son. After years alone, she falls in love with a new neighbor, Marvin (Gregory Hines). The women share their stories over lunches and conversations at Gloria’s salon.

2) Set It Off

How often do we root for criminals to steal a million dollars and live happily ever after? ‘Set It Off” was often described as a black ”Thelma and Louise”. This film made us want to revolt against a system that treated these women like criminals before they even broke the law. Stony (Jada Pinkett Smith) has had to act as a parent to her little brother Stevie after their parents died. Cleo (Queen Latifah) is a butch lesbian who wants nothing more than to customize her classic car. Tisean (Kimberly Elise) is a shy single mother trying to make ends meet and Frankie (Vivica A. Fox) is a bank teller who gets fired from her bank teller’s job simply because she knew one of the guys in a robbery that went wrong and left four people dead.

3) How Stella Got Her Groove Back

With the term “cougar” on everyone’s lips recently, this movie focuses on Stella (Angela Bassett), a divorced Black woman in her 40s who takes a much needed break from her job and travels to Jamaica where she meets and falls in love with Winston (Taye Diggs), who is half her age. Winston follows her to New York and the two try to decide if their relationship can work.

4) Beauty Shop

A spin-off from the popular “Barbershop” franchise, Queen Latifah struts her stuff in this sassy comedy.

Latifah’s Gina Norris, is living in Atlanta, where her young daughter Vanessa is studying piano at a prestigious music school. Gina is a stylist at a trendy salon who quits because she cannot deal with her boss’ condescending attitude. After getting a bank loan, Gina opens her own beauty shop in a not-so-desired neighborhood where she hires a staff of headstrong stylists.(Alfre Woodard, Golden Brooks and Sherri Shepherd).

5) Two Can Play That Game

Vivica A. Fox’s Shanté is a glamorous advertising executive, whose girlfriends turn to her for relationship advice. Shanté seems to have all the answers when it comes to romance and men. So when she catches her boyfriend Keith (Morris Chestnut) seeing another girl, Shanté will stop at nothing to win back his affections and her own pride. Her plan? She decides to implement a 10-day plan to eliminate the competition and get her man to mend his cheating ways. But of course there’s a twist…Dude doesn’t fall for Shanté’s games, and instead gives her a taste of her own medicine.
