Indiana Pacers player Paul George hurt himself pretty badly during an exhibition game for the USA Basketball team. He broke his leg in a gruesome fracture, similar to the one experienced by Louisville guard Kevin Ware during last year’s NCAA tournament.

George has had surgery on his leg, which turned out to be an open tibia/fibula fracture. He is expected be out for potentially the entire basketball season, which puts the Pacer’s playoff hopes in jeopardy, particularly with Lance Stephenson’s departure to the Charlotte Bobcats.

“There is no question about the impact on our team but our goal is to be as strong-willed and determined as Paul will be in coming back,” Pacer’s president Larry Bird told the Associated Press.  “Our franchise has had setbacks in its history but has demonstrated the abilities to recover. Paul will provide the example of that off the court and it is up to the rest of us to provide that example on the court.”

In the meantime, though, George decided to give himself a nice consolation prize, hoping it might ease the disappointment of having to sit out all or most of the NBA season. Click for the pic.
