Weed smokers received a big win in the Nation’s Capital as the DC Council votes 11-1 to decriminalize marijuana today.  Ironically, Marion Barry was not present for the vote. The lone no vote was rendered by Ward 7 councilwoman Yvette Alexander, who is afraid that decriminalizing marijuana usage is one step from full legalization.

There will be a second and final reading and vote on the marijuana decriminalization bill before the entire Council as early as Feb 18th, officials said.

Tommy Wells said that 90% of marijuana arrests in DC are African Americans and that our society is not served by arresting 5,000 people for public pot smoking. More than 5,000 people arrested annually in DC, says Wells.

Marijuana decriminalization is still not recognized on a federal level and it will be interesting to see how this DC vote will play in a city that is home to multiple federal law enforcement agencies.
