(Undated) — Federal health officials are growing increasingly concerned about young peoples’ attraction to flavored little cigars. A new report shows more than 35-percent of youth smokers use flavored tobacco products. While 2009’s Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act bans flavored non-menthol cigarettes, little cigars sold with fruit and candy flavorings are not covered under the legislation. Dr. Tim McAfee of the CDC says little cigars contain the same toxic and cancer-causing ingredients found in cigarettes. Overall, about six-percent of surveyed middle and high school students said they smoked flavored little cigars. The new findings are from the 2011 National Youth Tobacco Survey and are published in the “Journal of Adolescent Health.”
