SILVER SPRING, MD—Maryland’s emancipation of its enslaved population took place nearly 150 years ago in 1864. Each November, Montgomery Parks marks this historic milestone with a weekend of educational activities and events at various African American historic sites in our parks. This year’s celebrations of freedom from enslavement in Maryland include hikes on the Underground Railroad trail, a tour of a 19th century cabin and a museum, living history demonstrations, live music and food.

A special Emancipation Day event will take place on Saturday, November 1, at Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park in Olney and will include a reading of the Maryland Emancipation announcement, living history demonstrations, musical performances by local artists and a host of other activities for the whole family.

All events are open to the public. A schedule of weekend events is outlined below. More details are available at www.HistoryintheParks.org.
