(Washington, DC)  —  An effort is underway among some DC Councilmembers to draft legislation decriminalizing marijuana.  The “Washington Post” reports that Ward-8 Councilman Marion Barry and Ward-6 Councilman Tommy Wells are putting together a proposal to eliminate criminal penalties for those caught with small amounts of weed, or subject offenders to fines.  Wells, who chairs the council’s Judiciary and Public Safety Committee and has announced he’s running for mayor in 2014, would shepard the legislation which is expected to be introduced as early as this summer.  At-large councilwoman Anita Bonds is also considering a measure to decriminalize marijuana or reduce penalties for possession.  Both initiatives would be debated by Wells’ committee.
