My mom had two favorite artists when I was growing up,  Ray Charles and Richie Havens.   Havens was one of only three black artists to play Woodstock,  joining Jimi Hendrix and Sly and the Family Stone.

The Washington Post says his performance at the three-day 1969 Woodstock Festival, was a turning point in his career. He was the first act to hit the stage, performing for nearly three hours.
