OBIE Award winning actor and playwright Danai Guirira is at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre with her latest offering, “The Convert”–an honest, powerful, and compelling play about a young Zimbabwean woman’s struggle with dual identity as she embraces Roman Catholocism and clings to traditional culture.  Although the story is set in the colonial era (circa 1895), the themes transcend time period, race and gender.  Anyone that has felt pulled in opposite directions, for any reason, will be able to relate to the main character Jekesai (Esther).  The actors, many of which are local, are absolutely amazing.  Their portrayals are award-worthy.  The intimacy of the theater combined with raw performance is sure to evoke emotion.  Admittedly, I shed tears.

If you enjoy theatre, “The Convert” is a must.  The play runs at the Woolly from now until March 10th.  Enjoy a behind the scenes look at the first read for the play…
