(Washington, DC)  — The new Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial is set to open to the public this morning. The memorial, which sits along the Tidal Basin, will open at 11 a.m. and will close at 10 p.m. tonight.  Tickets are not required to enter the memorial site.  The official dedication event isn’t until Sunday, but due to high demand, officials decided to open up the site for several days this week.  It will be open again tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday.  The monument is centered around the “Stone of Hope,” a reference to Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream” speech.  On Sunday, President Obama will speak at the formal memorial dedication ceremony, also marking the 48th anniversary of Dr. King’s iconic speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
